Breeding Racing Pigeons
Having a fast and race winning pigeon all starts with the breeding process. As you will soon find out it is important to learn of all of the breeding racing pigeon techniques, record keeping, having a detailed plan and knowledge of mating seasons and hatching.
There are multiple types of breeding, such as:
In breeding- mother to son, father to daughter, brother to sister
Line breeding- cousin to cousin, grandfather to grand daughter, grandmother to grandson
Cross breeding- no relationship for at least 5 generations
In breeding will allow to keep the great qualities that the pigeons possess in the bloodline, and will higher the chance of the new born having that same quality. The downfall of this type of breeding, is the complete opposite, getting flawed pigeons. Just like in other species mating with this close of a relationship between the pigeons is the chance of getting a completely flawed bird. So this is not recommended to do all the time, but once in a while to maintain some of those qualities you want to keep in your loft.
Cross breeding is to have a winning racing pigeon, with fantastic qualities, mate with a younger, unrelated pigeon to bring spread those qualities. Now you won’t always get a strong exchange of qualities but it does happen often, and will allow the skill sets you are looking for spread across the loft.
Line breeding is the happy medium of the breeding racing pigeon techniques. This way you are still keeping it in the bloodline, yes allowing it to spread as well. This is the most used and common method in breeding racing pigeons. But do make sure you know of all 3 techniques, as you will should use all 3, in different cases of course.
The type you choose really depends on the pigeons you have and the qualities they have. And what you are looking to produce. It is an extremely good idea to have a plan set out of what kind of loft you want to have. It is much easier to produce a winning racing pigeon loft with a detailed plan you can follow, instead of just “winging it!”
With breeding you want to find good breeders. A good breeding pigeon is one that has great qualities for racing and gives that to their offspring. It is good to keep records of each pigeon that breeds, and with who. This way you keep producing the features you want, and eventually remove the features you don’t want with your racing pigeon.
To be honest, I don’t know of one top loft that doesn’t keep a amazing, detailed record of the racing pigeon breeding that they have done.
Make sure you choose good nesting materials so the eggs have sufficient incubation. Some materials that work well are:
tree twigs
straw
tobacco leaf stems
pine needles
And there are many others than can be used.
Allow the cock to choose his nest box, this is usually done in late winter or early spring. This is the time when mating will commence. The mating season will go all the way up to June on average. It is up to you (the fancier) when you will cease mating. However you do not want to over due it as it will cause health problems for your pigeons.
