Racing Pigeon Lofts

Having a carefully planned, and designed pigeon loft is essential for having a fast and healthy  pigeon.

You have want to have as much fresh air flowing through the racing pigeons loft as possible. So ventilation is key while building or buying a loft. Having a vent in the roof will allow hot air to escape and at the same time give your birds some sun!

Ventilation also helps with keeping moisture out of the loft. You must, MUST, keep your loft dry to avoid illness of your pigeons. Racing pigeon lofts must be dry, ventilated, have sun, kept clean in order to have a top prospect in the racing world. They are just like any other athlete, they must have fresh air and kept healthy.

Another way to keep  racing pigeon lofts dry is to build them 1-2 feet off the ground so that air can pass by underneath, creating a dry environment in, and out of the loft. This also stops rodents and such from living underneath. Which can be a pain once they start building nests, and getting into the feed!

The most popular type of roof for pigeon lofts are sloping roofs. You can also do a peaked roof if you prefer that style more. The only difference is that you fully control rain water running off the backside of the loft, so it keeps the loft clean.

If you do however decide to use the peaked roof, make sure you have an overhang of some sort like the sloping roof. But to control rain water, set up a mini gutter system, and have it exit off the back. This can be a bit more complex but it can be done.

In either case you might want to set up a fence of some sort to stop pigeons from landing on the roof.

Some fanciers decide they want to decorate their racing pigeon lofts, and that is okay. But please avoid bright colours. Using bright colours for paint, pictures or any other decoration is a bad idea and will only disrupt the process of breeding and training top competing racing pigeons.

One thing that is actually okay is to have noise around your lofts. Some have said it needs to be dead quiet, and that is not actually the case, noise is quite fine to have if it isn’t too loud. It is actually a good thing to a certain extent!

You owe it to yourself to try these methods and feel the wonderful results it can bring…and now you can!
