Training racing pigeons is a big, and important job. It includes everything from breeding, feeding, to the lofts and also the training techniques involved.
You can purchase training baskets and cages, different trapping systems, clocks, and speed charts. Which are useful but what is really important in training racing pigeons is the technique and behind the scene secrets that produce top competing pigeons.
If you have noticed, the top fanciers seem to win race after race…after race and after race. Why? Because they have developed a great training program with their pigeons. Training racing pigeons becomes a lot easier once you have decided to follow a program. I will leave links at the bottom to 2 amazing programs that have produced champion racing pigeons.
When you start to train your youngsters begin with a single toss and do this by their loft. A toss is when you release them from their training crate, or carrying crate whichever you call it. The important thing is to keep them close to the loft when you do this. This is just more of a free flying exercise to give them some strength. This is also a great time to work on signaling.
Signaling is when you use feed callers, whistle or some other technique that signals the pigeons to react in the way you want. It is a good to reward them with feed once they completed the task you have signaled for!
You will want to start distance training from about 1-2 miles. Do this a couple times and once your racing pigeons have confidence in doing so, increase the distance to 5 miles, continue this path up the desired distance. At the beginning you don’t want them going beyond 60 miles unless they are experienced, healthy, very well conditioned and there is a strong relationship with you. They will definitely have to react to your signals at these distances!
Don’t forget to create a training schedule that you can follow. Training racing pigeons with a proper schedule will allow you to receive the best results over and over again. And if something can be improved, you will be able to tell where in your schedule the problem is and be able to fix it quickly. It is the way to start winning consistent races. The back bone of training starts with proper breeding, and is heavily weighted with the nutrition you give your pigeons. Even human athletes need proper nutrition because no matter how good they are, they won’t perform well if the don’t have the right nutrients in their body. The same goes for racing pigeons.
